Künker sale 406, lot 4022

This specimen was lot 4022 in Künker sale 406 (Osnabrück, March 2024), where it sold for €700 (about US$919 including buyer's fees). The catalog description[1] noted,

"LÜBECK, STADT, 1/4 Dukat 1710, mit dem Abzeichen des Bürgermeisters Johann Westken. GOLD. Von großer Seltenheit. Hübsche Goldpatina, sehr schön-vorzüglich. (city of Lubeck, quarter ducat of 1710. Extremely rare, handsome gold patina, very fine to extremely fine.)"

As the city of Lubeck was a republic, not a monarchy, there was no need to periodically update the ruler's portrait. The standing knight design is strongly reminiscent of Dutch ducats of the same period. The SCWC lists sixteen dates known over the period of 1679-1728 yet, despite what seems substantial production, the type is very rare.

Recorded mintage: unknown.

Specification: 0.875 g, 0.986 fine gold, this specimen 0,83 g.

Catalog reference: KM 110, Behrens 583; Fr-1487.
