Künker sale 264, lot 3737

This specimen was lot 3737 in Künker sale 264 (Osnabrück, June 2015), where it sold for €13,000 (about US$16,794 including buyer's fees). The catalog description[1] noted,

"STADT 2 Dukaten 1701. CIVITATIS IMPERIALIS · / NO - VI · SPLEN - RIS · ORI - GO · Gekrönter Doppeladler mit dem Stadtwappen auf der Brust, unten das Abzeichen des Bürgermeisters Anton Winkler zwischen der geteilten Jahreszahl · 17 - 01 ·//MON · NOVA · - AVRE · LVB · / AVSPIC · NO - VI · SAECVLI · Der gekrönte und geharnischte Kaiser steht r. mit geschultertem Zepter, Reichsapfel und Schwert, zwischen seinen Füßen Münzmeisterzeichen "Arm mit Schwert" (Hans Ridder, Münzmeister der Stadt 1675-1715). GOLD. Von großer Seltenheit. Vorzüglich. Exemplar der Auktion Fritz Rudolf Künker 112, Osnabrück 2006, Nr. 1656. (Germany, city of Lubeck, double ducat of 1701. Obverse: crowned double headed eagle supporting city arms, burgomaster's arms and date below; reverse: crowned and armored emperor stands, holding sword, scepter and orb, burgomaster's badge below. Very rare, extremely fine, from Kunker sale 112, lot 1656.)"

As the city of Lubeck was a republic, not a monarchy, there was no need to periodically update the ruler's portrait. The standing knight design is strongly reminiscent of Dutch ducats of the same period. The SCWC lists 24 dates known over the period of 1656-1716 yet, despite what seems substantial production, the type is very rare.

Recorded mintage: unknown.

Specification: 7 g, 0.986 fine gold, this specimen 6.93 g.
