Lubeck 1692 1/4 ducat Fr-1487
This specimen was lot 4021 in Künker sale 406 (Osnabrück, March 2024), where it sold for €1,400 (about US$1,837 including buyer's fees). The catalog description[1] noted,
"LÜBECK, STADT, 1/4 Dukat 1692, mit dem Abzeichen des Bürgermeisters Johann Ritter. GOLD. Selten, besonders in dieser Erhaltung. Attraktives Exemplar, min. gewellt, vorzüglich-Stempelglanz. (city of Lubeck, quarter ducat of 1692. Scarce, especially in this quality, attractive example, slightly wavy, extremely fine to uncirculated.)"
As the city of Lubeck was a republic, not a monarchy, there was no need to periodically update the ruler's portrait. The standing knight design is strongly reminiscent of Dutch ducats of the same period. The SCWC lists sixteen dates known over the period of 1679-1728 yet, despite what seems substantial production, the type is very rare.
Recorded mintage: unknown.
Specification: 0.875 g, 0.986 fine gold, this specimen 0,86 g.
