Lippe-Detmold 1767-BS thaler Dav-2385
This specimen was lot 2218 in Künker Auction 425 (Osnabrück, July 2025), where it sold for €3,800 (about US$5,381 including buyers' fees). The catalog description[1] noted,
"DEUTSCHE MÜNZEN UND MEDAILLEN · LIPPE, GRAFSCHAFT, SEIT 1789 FÜRSTENTUM Simon August, 1734-1782. Konv.-Taler 1767, Detmold, auf seinen 40. Geburtstag. R Feine Patina, winz. Kratzer, vorzüglich. Das vorliegende Stück ist der einzige jemals nach dem Konventionsfuß ausgebrachte lippische Taler. Er entspricht allerdings nicht ganz den Vorschriften, da die Wertangabe fehlt. (Germany, county of Lippe-Detmold, Simon August, 1734-82, convention thaler of 1767, Detmold mint, for his fortieth birthday. Rare, fine patina, light hairlines, extremely fine. This piece is the only Lippe thaler ever struck according to the convention standard. However, it does not fully comply with the regulations, as the value is missing.)"
The initials "BS" are in the arabesques below the date. Lippe-Detmold's army allegedly comprised the count, one colonel and one private. The state's weakness--nobody else wanted it--probably enabled its survival until 1918.
Recorded mintage: unknown.
Specifications: 28.06 g, 0.833 fine silver, this specimen 28,02 g.
