This specimen was lot 72129 in Stack's Bowers Collector's Choice sale (Costa Mesa, CA, June 2021), where it sold for $264. The catalog description[1] noted, "LATVIA. 10 Latu, 1997. NGC PROOF-69 Ultra Cameo. Sailing ship Schooner Julia Maria facing left. An almost flawless Proof with hard mirrored fields and frosted cameo devices." We are unable to ascertain the significance of the schooner depicted here. In 1895, the date on the coin, Latvia was part of the Russian Empire. Other ten latu struck in 1997 include KM 28 and KM 35, both in silver.
