La Rioja 1850-RB 4 reales
This specimen was lot 73009 in Stack's Bowers Collector's Choice sale (Costa Mesa, CA, February 2022), where it sold for $1,560. The catalog description[1] noted, "ARGENTINA. La Rioja. 4 Reales, 1850-RB. NGC MS-65. Pop: 1; no other graded in Mint State by NGC. An unusually well preserved and attractive coin, exhibiting only the slightest of strike weaknesses on the centers, but otherwise boldly detailed. The surfaces are endowed with soft, full luster and uniform, light gray toning." This type was struck 1849-50 by the province of La Rioja with 1850 being the better date. A similar design was used on two reales (KM 15), eight reales (KM 8 and KM 10) and gold eight escudos (KM 9 and KM 11).
