La Rioja 1849-RB 4 reales

This specimen was lot 31102 in Heritage sale 3029 (New York, January 2014), where it sold for $129.25. The catalog description[1] noted, "La Rioja. 4 Reales 1849-RB, VF30 NGC. An original example of this provisional coinage with aged gold and gray toning." This type was struck in Argentina 1846-50 and is rather scarce. A similar design was used on two reales (KM 15), eight reales (KM 8 and KM 10) and gold eight escudos (KM 9 and KM 11).
