Kampen 1667 ducaton Dav-4945
This specimen was lot 1161 in Jean Elsen sale 162 (Brussels, June 2025), where it sold for €220 (about US$305 including buyer's fees). The catalog description[1] noted,
"NEDERLAND, KAMPEN, Stad, AR dukaton (zilveren rijder), 1667. Vz/ Ridder te paard r. boven het stadswapen. Kz/ Gekroond Generaliteitswapen gehouden door twee leeuwen. (Netherlands, city of Kampen, silver ducaton of 1667. Obverse: a mounted knight charges over the city arms; reverse: crowned arms of the Generality, supported by two lions. About Very Fine.)"
This fairly common ducaton is listed for 1659-82 with various mint marks. A very rare double ducaton (Dav-A4945) exists. The municipal mints' habit of coining to short weight and short alloy infuriated the Estates General, which spent most of the seventeenth century on a campaign to close them all.
Recorded mintage: unknown.
Specification: 32.78 g, 0.941 fine silver, this specimen 32,59 g.
