Schulman 385-0255r.jpg

This specimen was lot 255 in Schulman auction 385 (Amsterdam, July 2025), where it did not sell. The catalog description[1] noted,

"KAMPEN. Leeuwendaalder, 1667, Silver Type IIb. Ridder naar rechts met pluim achter leeuwenschild. Kz. klimmende leeuw, mmt. morenkop tussen jaartal. Kleine plekjes kopergroen, sporen van originele muntkleur. Bijna prachtig. (city of Kampen, lion dollar of 1667, type IIb. Obverse: Knight facing right with plume behind lion shield; reverse: lion rampant, Moor's head mintmark divides the date. Some spots of verdigris and a little original luster, nearly fine.)"

"Lion" daalders were struck in the town of Kampen and other Dutch provinces until 1697 but are seldom seen in collectible condition. This subtype is listed for 1664-67 and 1672. The municipal mints' habit of coining to short weight and short alloy infuriated the Estates General, which spent most of the seventeenth century on a campaign to close them all.

Recorded mintage: unknown.

Specification: 27.68 g, 0.750 fine silver, this specimen 27.15 g.
