Java AH 1228-Z rupee
This specimen was lot 51276 in Stack's Bowers Hong Kong auction (Hong Kong, April 2021), where it sold for $5,280. The catalog description[1] noted, NETHERLANDS EAST INDIES. Java. Rupee, "AH 1668" [AH 1228] (1813/4). NGC MS-64. Quite alluring and shimmering, this attractive near-Gem offers a pleasing tone and quality that is virtually unheard of. Compare to a PCGS MS-63, which realized a total of $3,720 in June 2018." Java, the chief island of Indonesia, was occupied by the British 1811-16. This rupee was struck by them AH 1228-1229 along with a half rupee while they held the island. After the Congress of Vienna in 1815, Indonesia was returned to the Dutch but the English kept their colonies in Malaya, especially Singapore.
