Java 1814 duit
This specimen was lot 1327 in Stephen Album sale 38 (Santa Rosa, CA, September 2020), where it sold for $333.20. The catalog description[1] noted, "JAVA: British Occupation, 1811-1815, cent, 1814, East India Company issue, some oxidation spots and pits, two-year type in tin, still attractive, About Unc." Java, the chief island of Indonesia, was occupied by the British 1811-16. This duit was struck by them 1813-14 while they held the island. After the Vienna Congress in 1815, Indonesia was returned to the Dutch but the English kept their colonies in Malaya, especially Singapore. This type is common in low grade. The enormous mintage noted below, if accurate, must have taken several years to produce, even in Boulton and Watt's mint where this was likely made.
