This specimen was lot 4165 in Stack's-Bowers NYINC sale (New York, January 2015), where it sold for $1,586.25. The catalog description[1] noted, "NETHERLANDS EAST INDIES. Madura Island. Rupee, AH 1230 (1814-15). PCGS MS-62. British East India Company. Edge crack. Sharply struck. Attractive iridescent toning. From the Demarete Collection." Java, the chief island of Indonesia, was occupied by the British 1811-16. This rupee was struck by them 1813-17 while they held the island. After the Vienna Congress in 1815, Indonesia was returned to the Dutch but the English kept their colonies in Malaya, especially Singapore.
