Java 1804-Z rupee
This specimen was lot 32223 in Stack's Bowers NYINC sale (New York, January 2025), where it sold for $7,800. The catalog description[1] noted, "NETHERLANDS EAST INDIES. Dutch Java. Rupee, 1804-Z. Batavia Mint; mm: Trefoil. NGC MS-62. A very handsome example that stands as the sole finest example holdered by NGC with bright luster and deep tone across the surfaces. A visually pleasing piece that will command much attention." This type was struck by the Dutch in 1804-08. Another variety exists, struck on a thick planchet. Java, the chief island of Indonesia, was occupied by the British 1811-16. After the Congress of Vienna in 1815, Indonesia was returned to the Dutch but the English kept their colonies in Malaya, especially Singapore.
