Java 1805 stuiver
This specimen was lot 72595 in Stack's Bowers Collector's Choice sale (Costa Mesa, CA, June 2021), where it sold for $90. The catalog description[1] noted, "NETHERLANDS EAST INDIES. Batavian Republic. Java. Stuiver, 1805. NGC VF-30 Brown. A thick dump bonk coin with clearly detailed obverse and readable date on the reverse." This type was struck 1800-06 by the local administration to alleviate a shortage of coin. They also produced a double bonk and quintuple bonk. In 1808, the Batavian Republic collapsed and was replaced by a French puppet kingdom ruled by Napoleon's brother, who sent a new set of officials to the East Indies. The English retaliated by capturing Java in 1811 and occupying it until 1815.
