Java 1803-Z rupee

Heritage sale 3010, lot 23050

This specimen was lot 23050 in Heritage sale 3010 (Boston, August 2010), where it sold for $1,475.45. The catalog description^[1] noted, "Java. Rupee 1803-Z, UNC, lightly cleaned. Struck on a thick planchet. Few around this choice." This type was struck by the Dutch in 1801-03. Java, the chief island of Indonesia, was occupied by the British 1811-16. After the Vienna Congress in 1815, Indonesia was returned to the Dutch but the English kept their colonies in Malaya, especially Singapore.
