Java 1801-Z rupee
This specimen was lot 2775 in Stephen Album sale 41 (Santa Rosa, CA, September 2021), where it sold for $168. The catalog description[1] noted, "NETHERLANDS EAST INDIES: Batavian Republic, AR rupee, Java, 1801-Z, Jawi script legends, ili jazirat jawa alkabir (For the island of Java the Great), date and mintmaster initial below // dirham min kampani walandawi (Dirham of the Dutch Company), bold VF." This type was struck by the Dutch in 1801-03. Java, the chief island of Indonesia, was occupied by the British 1811-16. After the Vienna Congress in 1815, Indonesia was returned to the Dutch but the English kept their colonies in Malaya, especially Singapore.
