Japan 1964 1000 yen Olympic

This 1000 yen, the first of its denomination, was struck in 1964 in honor of the Tokyo Olympics held that year. The first Olympic commemorative was the Finnish 500 markkaa struck 1951-52 for the Helsinki Olympics; this Japanese issue may be the second. The numismatic marketplace is now flooded by Olympic commemoratives issued by cash-hungry sports committees but in 1964 the concept was still novel. The popularity of this coin has been maintained by its classic design of Mount Fuji.
