This sen was issued in the closing days of World War Two as the Japanese war effort was collapsing under the weight of defeat and atomic bombing. Similar clay five and ten sen exist but are rare. Japanese coinage was reformed in 1948 during the Macarthur administration and all denominations under one yen were dropped.
