This specimen was struck for Japan by the Tokyo mint, which issued this type 1967-88. The fifty yen was introduced in 1955 as part of Macarthur's currency reform of 1948, which dropped all denominations under one yen. The hole was added in 1959 and the coin shrunk to its current size in 1967. It is still being issued today under Akihito's name.
Recorded mintage: 200,000,000.
Specification: 4 g, copper-nickel, 21 mm diameter, reeded edge.
