Japan S4 50 yen rev DSLR.jpg

This fifty sen was struck in Japan during the reign of the Showa emperor, Hirohito (1926-1989). The type was struck 1928-38; this date (year 4) is among the less common. Prior to the opening of Japan in the 1850's and 1860's, Japanese coins were a mix of Chinese-style cast copper cash, silver rectangular "bu" and rare, gold "oban." At the turn of the century, the fifty sen was 13.48 g, 0.800 fine; this coin illustrates that inflation was well underway in Japan even before she embarked on her imperialist expansion in China. The last fifty sen coin was issued in 1948.

Recorded mintage: 12,568,000.

Specification: 4.95 g, .720 silver, .114 troy oz ASW.

Catalog reference: KM Y#50.
