This specimen was lot 4043 in Stack's-Bowers NYINC sale (New York, January 2015), where it sold for $146.88. The catalog description[1] noted, "JAPAN. 50 Sen, Year 34 (1901). NGC MS-63. Lovely light golden toning around the devices. Attractive satiny surface luster." This type was struck 1873-77, 1880, 1885, 1897-1905. Many early dates are very rare but this one is only slightly scarce. In 1906 the weight was reduced to 10.10 g, then reduced to 4.95 g in 1922.

Specification: 13.48 g, 0.800 fine silver, .344 troy oz ASW, 29 mm diameter.
