This specimen was lot 51219 in Stack's Bowers Hong Kong auction (Hong Kong, April 2021), where it sold for $1,320. The catalog description[1] noted, "JAPAN. 50 Sen, Year 33 (1900). Osaka Mint. Mutsuhito (Meiji). PCGS MS-66 Gold Shield. Tied with just four other specimens for the finest in the PCGS census, this exceptional Gem presents a mix of amber-gray toning throughout, along with a great deal of shimmering brilliance underneath." This type, roughly equal to a half dollar, was issued 1873-77, 1880, 1885 and 1897-1905. The later dates are common.
