This specimen was part of lot 50222 in Ponterio sale 168 (Philadelphia, August 2012), where it sold for $940. The catalog description[2] noted, "JAPAN. 5 Yen, Year 31 (1898). PCGS AU-58 Secure Holder." This type was issued intermittently 1897-1912. It represents a 50% reduction in weight from the type of 1872-97 (KM Y11a).

Recorded mintage: 55,888.

Specification: 4.16 g, 0.900 fine gold, .120 troy oz AGW.
