This specimen was lot 1205 in Stack's Bowers ANA auction (Chicago, August 2014), where it sold for $11,750. The catalog description[1] noted, "JAPAN. 5 Yen, Year 25 (1892). PCGS MS-66 Secure Holder. RARE date. Brilliant and attractive. A superb gem. From the Joseph Vas Collection." This type was struck 1872-97 and then the denomination was reduced in weight 50%. One may surmise that the regime melted all the old weight specimens it could lay hands on and most dates, except the 1872-73, are rare.
