Italy 2001-R 50000 lire
This specimen was lot 23173 in Stack's Bowers ANA sale (Chicago, August 2019), where it did not sell. It was offered again as lot 71161 in Stack's Bowers Collector's Choice sale (Santa Ana, CA, February 2020), where it sold for $408. The catalog description[1] noted, "ITALY. 50000 Lire, 2001. NGC PROOF-69 Ultra Cameo. Struck to commemorate the 250th anniversary of the Palace of Caserta. A virtually perfect example of the type with a listed value of $600 in the Standard Catalog of World Coins. Brilliant with hard mirror fields and frosted cameo devices." The palace of Caserta, the seat of the Bourbon kings of Naples, still stands outside of Naples. Among other events, the German army in Italy surrendered to Allied forces there in April 1945.
