Italy 1994-R 100000 lire
This specimen was lot 1867 in Aureo y Calicó sale 423 (Barcelona, December 2023), where it sold for 780 € (about US$1,010 including buyer's fees). The catalog description[1] noted, "Italy. 1994. R (Rome). 100000 liras. Bank of Italy. In official case with certificate. Rare. AU. Proof." Central banks have become addicted to self-congratulatory NCLT's honoring unimportant anniversaries. The central bank of Italy, on its centennial, issued this gold 100,000 lire in 1994 along with a gold 50,000 lire (KM 176). The obverse depicts Luigi Einaudi. Wikipedia notes, "Luigi Numa Lorenzo Einaudi (1874-1961) was an Italian politician and economist. He served as the president of Italy from 1948 to 1955."
