Aureo y Calicó sale 423, lot 1868

This specimen was lot 1868 in Aureo y Calicó sale 423 (Barcelona, December 2023), where it sold for 385 € (about US$499 including buyer's fees). The catalog description[1] noted, "Italy. 1994. R (Rome). 50000 liras. Bank of Italy. In official case with certificate. AU. Proof." Central banks have become addicted to self-congratulatory NCLT's honoring unimportant anniversaries. The central bank of Italy, on its centennial, issued this gold 100,000 lire in 1994 along with a gold 100,000 lire (KM 177). The obverse depicts Bonaldo Stringher. Wikipedia notes, "Bonaldo Stringher (1854-1930) was an Italian banker, economist and politician."
