Italy 1862-N 5 centesimi
This specimen was lot 564 in Classical Numismatic Group's sale of the Lissner Collection (Chicago, August 2014), where it sold for $272.25. The catalog description[1] noted, "ITALY, Regno d'Italia. Vittorio Emanuele II. 1861-1878. CU 5 Centesimi. Napoli (Naples) mint. Dated 1862 N. In NGC encapsulation graded MS 64 RB. Beautiful red toning under light brown patina. Only one graded for the date, none higher. Purchased from M. Louis Teller, September 1974." This type was struck at the Bologna and Milan mints 1861 and 1867 and at the Naples mint (shown here) 1861-62 and 1867 during the reign of Victorio Emanuele II of Italy. It is struck to the same standard as the contemporary French five centimes. Such a prodigious quantity was issued that no more were minted until 1895.
