Emilia 1859 5 centesimi
This specimen was lot 2546 in Sincona sale 87 (Zürich, October 2023), where it sold for 100 CHF (about US$135 including buyer's fees). The catalog description[1] noted,
"ITALIEN Königreich, Vittorio Emanuele II. Re Eletto, 1859-1861. 5 Centesimi 1859, Firenze. Selten in dieser Erhaltung. (kingdom of Italy, Victor Emanuel II, king elect, 1859-61, five centesimi of 1859, Florence mint. Rare in this condition. PCGS MS64 BN."
This was a provisional issue from Florence while the kingdom of Italy was being organized in 1859-60. The large quantity minted means that it is common today. It supplanted another provisional five centesimi dated 1826 (but struck in 1860) and was in turn superseded by another five centesimi struck for the kingdom of Italy in the 1860's.
Recorded mintage: 13,705,500 plus proofs.
Specification: 5 g, copper, 25 mm diameter.
Catalog reference: KM 6, Mont. 123, Pagani 445.
