Ireland 1955 florin
This specimen was lot 45125 in Stack's Bowers ANA sale (Costa Mesa, CA, August 2021), where it sold for $55. The catalog description[1] noted, "IRELAND. Florin (2 Shillings), 1955. NGC MS-65. A sharply struck Florin, fully lustrous with dark gray to almond toning throughout." The first Irish florins (= two shillings), issued 1928-37, featured the obverse legend "SAORSTAT EIREANN"; the second (KM 15), issued 1939-43, merely stated "EIRE." The subsequent and final type (shown here), issued 1951-69, was copper-nickel. The reverse depicts a salmon, a fish common in Irish rivers. This date is common tho the proofs are rare.
Recorded mintage: 1,000,000 plus a few proofs.
