Sincona sale 88, lot 204

The first specimen was lot 4101 in Sincona sale 67 (Zürich, October 2020), where it sold for 3,400 CHF (about US$4,476 including buyer's fees). The catalog description[1] noted,

"IRAN | Qajar Dynasty | Nâsir al-dîn Shâh, 1264-1313 H./1848-1896 AD, Manually produced gold coinage. 2 Tomân 1271 H., Kirmânshâhân (dâr ad-daula). Facing bust, sultanic title to right and name to left of the bust in cartouches, rev. mint and date in wreath, a small lion and sun above. Very fine."

The second specimen was lot 204 in Sincona sale 88 (Zürich, May 2024), where it sold for 5,500 CHF (about US$7,268 including buyer's fees). The catalog description[2] noted,

"IRAN, Qajar Dynasty, Naser al-Din Shah, 1264-1313 (1848-1896). 2 Toman 1271 AH (1855), Kermanshahan Mint. Type with facing bust. Äusserst selten, Kleine Henkelspur; Extremely rare. NGC AU Details. Small mount mark. Purchased from S. Cordry, San Diego, California, in 1987."

The SCWC lists double tomans from three mints, including Kirmanshahan (shown here), Mashhad (KM 864) and Tabriz. All are rare. When milled coinage was introduced, the weight of the double toman was reduced to 5.75 g.

Specification: 6.90 g, gold, the first specimen 6.89 g, the second specimen 6.86 g.
