Iran AH 1271 toman KM-858
The first specimen was lot 206 in Sincona sale 88 (Zürich, May 2024), where it sold for 7,000 CHF (about US$9,250 including buyer's fees). The catalog description[1] noted,
"IRAN, Qajar Dynasty, Naser al-Din Shah, 1264-1313 (1848-1896). Toman 1271 AH (1855), Tehran Mint. Type with facing bust. Äusserst seltener Typ; Extremely rare type. NGC MS62. Purchased from Stack's Bowers, New York, in 1997."
The second specimen was lot 83 in Sincona sale 92 (Zürich, October 2024), where it sold for 8,000 CHF (about US$11,088 including buyer's fees). The catalog description[2] noted,
"IRAN Qajar Dynasty, Nasir al-Din Shah, 1264-1313 AH (1848-1896). Toman 1271 AH (1854/1855), Tehran Mint. Portrait type with bust in profile to left. Äusserst selten, Extremely rare. NGC MS62. Purchased from Spink & Son, London, in 1983. Finest certified by NGC."
This gold denomination was struck at numerous mints in the beginning of the reign of Nasir al-Din Shah. This style is listed from Tehran for AH 1271 only. This example realized over five times the catalog value. This half kran may be an off-metal strike of this issue.
