Stack's Bowers November 2023 Collector's Choice sale, lot 74188

This specimen was lot 74188 in Stack's Bowers Collector's Choice sale (Costa Mesa, CA, November 2023), where it sold for $80. The catalog description[1] noted, "INDIA. Mint Error -- Rotated Dies -- 1/4 Anna, 1942-(C). Calcutta Mint. George VI. NGC MS-63 Red Brown. An impressive piece, particularly when considering the rotated dies, this example will capture many excited bids on account of its beauty." The SCWC notes that the introduction of the second head in low relief marked a reduction in weight to 4.60 g. The first head was used 1938-40, the second head (shown here) was used 1940-42. In 1942, the denomination was terminated.
