India 1908(c) 1/2 rupee
This specimen was lot 52360 in Stack's Bowers ANA sale (Pittsburgh, PA, August 2023), where it sold for $900. The catalog description[1] noted, "INDIA. 1/2 Rupee, 1908-(C). Calcutta Mint. Edward VII. PCGS PROOF-63. A wonderful example of a handsome proof restrike, the present specimen delivers a shimmering and rich reflective luster. Evidence of marking or hairlines are scant, a less commonly encountered trait on such restrikes. As a pleasing example, we expect many competitive bids to be launched for this piece." The half rupees of Edward VII were struck 1904-10 and most dates are common. Proofs are rare. The Bombay mint did not strike this denomination in 1908.
Recorded mintage: 1,577,000 plus proofs and restrikes.
Specification: 5.83 g, 0.917 fine silver.
