The first specimen was lot 53172 in Stack's Bowers Hong Kong auction (Hong Kong, April 2021), where it sold for $2,880. The catalog description[1] noted, "CHINA. Hupeh. 5 Cash, CD (1906). NGC MS-64 Red Brown. Two peak cloud variety. The single finest certified of the variety and "RED BROWN" designation on the NGC population report. A SCARCE issue in this state of preservation. The piece exhibits a bold strike with nice cartwheel luster and nearly complete original mint red on the obverse while the reverse displays a combination of mint red and light brown throughout. A choice example of the type with good eye appeal destine[d] for a fine cabinet." The second specimen was lot 55194 in the same sale, where it sold for $312. The catalog description[1] noted, "CHINA. Hupeh. 5 Cash, CD (1906). PCGS AU-53 Gold Shield. Two Peak Cloud variety. A pleasing coin with dark brick red patina, needle-sharp strike details, and no notable marks." Altho the regime decreed the striking of one, five, ten and twenty cash in copper, the vast majority produced were ten cash.
