Künker sale 386, lot 5512

This specimen was lot 5512 in Künker sale 386 (Osnabrück, March 2023), where it sold for €17,000 (about US$21,968 including buyer's fees). The catalog description[1] noted,

"RÖMISCH-DEUTSCHES REICH, Leopold I. 1657-1705. Reichstaler 1667, KB, Kremnitz. Geharnischtes Brustbild r. mit Lorbeerkranz und umgelegter Kette des Ordens vom Goldenen Vlies//Gekrönter Doppeladler mit Schwert und Zepter in den Fängen, auf der Brust das gekrönte, vierfeldige Wappen Ungarn-Böhmen mit dem Mittelschild Österreich-Burgund. Sehr selten, besonders in dieser Erhaltung. Kabinettstück. Herrliche Patina, fast Stempelglanz. (Holy Roman Empire, Leopold I, 1657-1705, thaler of 1667, Kremnitz mint. Obverse: armored and laureate bust with order chain; reverse: crowned doubleheaded eagle with sword and scepter in its claws, on its breast the crowned, quartered arms of Hungary and Bohemia with the escutcheon of Austria and Burgundy. Very scarce, especially in this quality. Cabinet piece, superb patina, about uncirculated.)"

This type was struck 1664-68, 1671-73 and is rare. This example realized twelve times the catalog value. It varies from the similar Dav-3257 in depicting the emperor with a different lace collar.
