Hungary 1599-NB thaler Dav-8069
This specimen was lot 30105 in Heritage sale 3089 (Dallas, TX, January 2021), where it sold for $5,040. The catalog description[1] noted, "Hungary. Rudolf II Taler 1599-NB MS62 NGC, Nagybánya mint (in Transylvania), Fully Mint State and exhibiting gleaming mint luster uniformly expressed against an appealing orange-gold tone. A couple of die breaks may be seen to the obverse, including a larger one within the lower legends near 6 o'clock. From the Cape Coral Collection of European Crowns." The Hapsburg ruler styled himself king of Hungary but actually ruled only a slice near the Austrian border, the remainder being divided between the Ottoman Turks and the prince of Transylvania. Davenport lists this type for 1598-99. It is very similar to Dav-8068 but with the emperor's titles laid out in a different order. Klippes exist.
