Sincona sale 47, lot 2006

This specimen was lot 2006 in Sincona sale 47 (Zürich, May 2018), where it sold for 1,800 CHF (about US$2,160 including buyer's fees). The catalog description[1] noted,

"Heiliges Romisch Reich, Rudolf II. 1576-1612. Taler 1598, Nagybanya. Vorzüglich. Hübsche Patina. (Holy Roman Empire, Austria, Rudolf II, 1576-1612, thaler of 1598, Nagybánya mint. Extremely fine, Attractive patina.)"

The Hapsburg ruler styled himself king of Hungary but actually ruled only a slice near the Austrian border, the remainder being divided between the Ottoman Turks and the prince of Transylvania. Davenport lists this one year type with Dav-A8068 (triple thaler) and Dav-B8068 (double thaler). It is very similar to Dav-8069 but with the emperor's titles laid out in a different order.

Recorded mintage: unknown.

Specification: silver, this specimen 29.19 g.

Catalog reference: Huszar 1936, Dav-8068.
