Honduras H3035-33951r.jpg

Two reales were struck intermittently using good silver at Tegucigalpa, Honduras, during 1825-32. Various types of debased silver were issued until 1854. All are scarce and rare in nice condition. This specimen was lot 33951 in Heritage sale 3035 (Long Beach, September 2014), where it sold for $1,527.50. The catalog description[1] noted,

"Estado de Honduras - Provisional 2 Reales 1851-G Very Fine. The KM valuation is based on the sale of a VF example in the Whittier sale by Heritage 8 years ago. That piece had a clear date easily discernible despite the surface being lightly porous; the $2000 hammer price likely was influenced by the mention that only three are confirmed. That population report likely does not include the only Dana Robert's example, his lot 26001, as it was a mint error and not provable. Most of the other collections which would have wished to have an example of the date had the common 4 Reales instead, or perhaps the very scarce 1 Real, but not this denomination. This piece has some obvious handling but it is fully detailed with a bold clear date. This may be a fourth example or perhaps one of the confirmed three earlier reported."

Recorded mintage: unknown.

Specification: 6.77 g, .100 fine silver.

Catalog reference: KM 19c.
