Holland 1684 3 gulden Dav-4953
This specimen was lot 32269 in Heritage sale 3105 (New York, January 2023), where it sold for $6,600. The catalog description[1] noted, "Netherlands: Holland. Provincial 3 Gulden 1684 UNC Details (Edge Damage) NGC, A highly captivating representative that provides instant verification of additional care and attention to detail that accompanied the piece's production. Clearly of advanced quality and preservation compared to its contemporaries and the product of an exacting strike that renders seemingly Prooflike appearances. Enveloped in champagne silhouettes and ample mint flash, this survivor remains a top-tier contender for advanced Dutch collectors. From the Coenen Collection." This denomination was struck sporadically in the province of Holland starting in 1680. This variety, with the Dutch maid on the obverse and the lion in a beaded circle, was struck 1684 only and is rare. We don't know why this example is so underweight.
Recorded mintage: unknown.
Specification: 31.82 g, 0.920 fine silver, this specimen 41 mm diameter, 24.64 g.
