from Sincona sale 11, lot 2142

This specimen was lot 2142 in Sincona sale 11 (Zürich, May 2013), where it sold for 750 CHF (about US$929 including buyer's fees). The catalog description[1] noted,

"NIEDERLANDE Holland, Provinz 2 Gulden 1687. Gutes sehr schön. (Netherlands, province of Holland, two gulden of 1687, good very fine.)"

This type, a rare denomination, was struck 1681-2 and 1687. Double gulden are recorded from Friesland (KM 53), Gelderland (KM 66, 67, 69), Holland (KM 57, 62, 75), Overijssel (KM 62) and Westfriesland (KM 82) but the denomination doesn't seem to have caught on. Half, one and three gulden also exist.

Specification: 21.2 g, .920 fine silver, this specimen 21.05 g.
