Hesse-Cassel 1864-CP thaler Dav-697
This specimen was lot 940 in Künker sale 263 (Osnabrück, June 2015), where it sold for €460 (about US$594 including buyer's fees). The catalog description[1] noted,
"HESSEN-KASSEL, KURFÜRSTENTUM Friedrich Wilhelm, 1847-1866. Vereinstaler 1864. Mit Signatur C. P. am Halsabschnitt. Selten in dieser Erhaltung. Prachtexemplar. Herrliche Patina, fast Stempelglanz. (Electorate of Hesse, Frederick William, 1847-66, union thaler of 1864 with initials "C.P." on truncation. Rare in this quality, proof example, handsome patina, choice uncirculated.)"
This type was issued 1858-65 and comes with and without the engraver's initials "C.P." on the truncation of the bust. The Elector chose the wrong side in the Austro-Prussian war of 1866 and had his domain annexed to Prussia for his pains.
