Stack's Bowers February 2023 Collector's Choice sale, lot 73332

This specimen was lot 73332 in Stack's Bowers Collector's Choice sale (Costa Mesa, CA, February 2023), where it sold for $780. The catalog description[1] noted, "GERMANY. Saxe-Altenburg. Taler, 1864-B. Dresden Mint. Ernst I. PCGS MS-64. Surpassed by just one other example on the PCGS population report, this near-Gem is a sight to see with satin like surfaces and a sharp strike that is sure to inspire the German specialist." This type was issued 1858, 1864 and 1869 and is the only affordable thaler from this state. Ernst was duke 1853-1908.
