Hesse-Cassel 1861 thaler Dav-697
This specimen was lot 31471 in Heritage sale 3067 (Long Beach, September 2018), where it sold for $504. The catalog description[1] noted, "German States: Hesse-Cassel. Friedrich Wilhelm Taler 1861 MS62 NGC. Without CP. Deeply toned along the edges, leading to bright and lustrous centers. A type not often encountered in high grade." This type was issued 1858-65 and comes with and without the engraver's initials "C.P." on the truncation of the bust. It superseded a reichsthaler (22.27 g, 0.750 fine silver, KM 617). The Elector chose the wrong side in the Austro-Prussian war of 1866 and had his domain annexed to Prussia for his pains.
