This specimen was lot 44428 in Stack's Bowers ANA sale (Costa Mesa, CA, August 2021), where it sold for $780. The catalog description[1] noted, "GERMANY. Hesse-Cassel. Taler, 1630-TS. Wilhelm V. NGC VF-35. An evenly worn and problem-free Taler, with gray toning that darkens at the peripheries. From the Midtown Collection." This rare two-year type was issued during the reign of the landgrave William V (r. 1627-37); twelve different thalers are known with this theme, all dated 1628-38. Hesse-Cassel was promoted to an Electorate in 1803 and was annexed by Prussia in 1866.
