Sincona sale 33, lot 2232

This specimen was lot 2232 in Sincona sale 33 (Zürich, October 2016), where it sold for 1,500 CHF (about US$1,781 including buyer's fees). The catalog description[1] noted,

"Hessen-Kassel, Landgrafschaft, Wilhelm V. 1627-1637 Taler 1628. Weidenbaumtaler. Sehr schön-vorzüglich, Hübsche Patina. (Germany, landgraviate of Hesse-Cassel, William V, 1627-37, "palm tree" thaler of 1628. Very fine-extremely fine, Attractive patina.)"

This rare three-year type of 1627-29 was issued during the reign of the landgrave William V (r. 1627-37); twelve different thalers are known with this theme, all dated 1628-38. Hesse-Cassel was promoted to an Electorate in 1803 and was annexed by Prussia in 1866.
