This type was struck for the Kingdom of Hejaz, now the western part of Saudi Arabia, in the early 1920's. The coinage of Hejaz was initially comprised of countermarked coins from Turkey and Maria Teresa Thalers, with later regular issues until Hejaz was eventually assimiliated into Saudi Arabia.
This specimen was lot 1398 in Stephen Album sale 14 (September 21, 2012), and did not sell. The catalog description[1] noted, "HEJAZ: al-Husayn b. Ali, 1916-1924, AE ½ piastre, Makka, AH1334 year 5, some surface hairlines, NGC graded Uncirculated details, ex. Bseiso collection."
