Hannover SB118-22706r.jpg

This specimen was lot 22706 in Stack's Bowers NYINC sale (New York, January 2018), where it sold for $144. The catalog description[1] noted, "GERMANY. Hannover. 1/12 Taler, 1853-B. PCGS MS-67 Secure Holder. Sharply struck with lovely toning and strong underlying luster. An exceptional gem with great eye appeal." This is the more common of the two dates of this type (1852-53). This denomination was struck in various styles 1822-62 and superseded the previous three mariengroschen. Like most German minors, the catalog prices do not reflect their true rarity, particularly in choice condition. Hannover was on the losing side of the Austro-Prussian war of 1864 and found herself annexed in 1866.

Recorded mintage: unknown.

Specification: 2.67 g, .520 fine silver.

Catalog reference: KM-219.
