Hannover 1823 16 gute groschen
This specimen was lot 2625 in Sincona sale 57 (Zürich, May 2019), where it sold for 160 CHF (about US$191 including buyer's fees). The catalog description[1] noted,
"DEUTSCHLAND | Braunschweig-Lüneburg-Calenberg-Hannover, Herzogtum, Georg IV. 1820-1830. 16 Gute Groschen 1823, Hannover. Gutes vorzüglich. Hübsche Patina. (Germany, kingdom of Hannover, George IV, 1820-30, sixteen good groschen of 1823, Hannover mint. Good extremely fine, Attractive patina.)"
The sixteen gute groschen was half a thaler; unusually for a minor coin, it was almost pure silver. It was issued for Hannover 1820-34. The denomination was terminated when the thaler was reduced from 23.54 g to 16.82 g. This particular type of 1822-30 is the most common.
Recorded mintage: unknown but not rare.
Specification: 11.77 g, .993 fine silver, this specimen 11.78 g.
