Künker sale 294, lot 3598

This specimen was lot 3598 in Künker sale 294 (Osnabrück, Germany, July 2017), where it sold for €6,500 (about US$8,761 including buyer's fees). The catalog description[1] noted,

"BRAUNSCHWEIG UND LÜNEBURG, BRAUNSCHWEIG-CALENBERG-HANNOVER, Georg III. 1760-1820. 5 Taler 1814, C. Ausbeute der Harzer Gruben. Harzgold. Roß springt l.//Wert, Jahreszahl und Münzzeichen in vier Zeilen. Mit schrägem Riffelrand. GOLD. Von großer Seltenheit. Hübsche Goldtönung, sehr schön-vorzüglich. Exemplar der Preussag Collection, Part I. Auktion London Coin Galleries/Künker 1, London 2015, Nr. 328. (Germany, electorate of Hannover, George III, 1760-1820, five thaler of 1814, for the Harz mines. Obverse: stallion springs left; reverse: value, date and mintmark in four lines. Very rare, handsome toning, very fine to extremely fine.)"

Various types of five thaler pieces were struck most years between 1813 and 1856; the type shown here was issued 1814-15 only from gold mining in the Harz. The kingdom of Hannover was the old duchy of Brunswick-Luneburg prior to the Napoleonic invasions. It was separated from the British crown in 1837 and absorbed by Prussia in 1866.
